it's tuesday, february 2nd, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." the first votes are in, and the race is on. iowa caucusgoers deliver a victory for republican ted cruz over donald trump while democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders are locked in a virtual tie. as the candidates pull out of iowa, wintry weather, storms, snow, and ice blows into the plains from the rockies. and countdown to kickoff. super bowl week gets under way as the broncos and the panthers talk pigskin in prime time.

captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom in studio headquarters in new york. i'm anne-marie green. good to be with you. the first caucus of 2016 held surprises and frustration. senator ted cruz was the republican win bier while the race is historically close, hillary clinton is declaring victory. according to the numbers, vermont's bernie sanders is in a tie with tr marco rubio had a stronger showing right on cruz's heels. >> he turned out according to evangelical and conservative leaders and it paid off. >> tonight is a victory for

courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this a great nation. >> reporter: cruz parlayed a strong turnout to overtake a humbled donald trump. >> we finished second. i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. we'll go on to get the republican knowledge nation and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever they throw out there r it was a employee for trump. attracted those disenchanted angry inway. others attended their first caucus. most supported trump. cruz won the caucus growers who described themselves as conservative and evangelical. the other story last night, marco rubio. >> we have taken a first step but an important step. >> reporter: rubio is seened a a more alternative conservative.

that may play a role in more moderate former mike huckabee suspended his campaign. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will likely bit iowa delegates. for your sanders it represents a huge comeback while for clinton it's yet another signal of a long campaign ahead. nancy cordes is following the democrats. >> reporter: hillary clinton was defeated eight years ago by barack obama and this time she saw her lead against bernie sanders evaporate over the past few months. this caucus last night revealed not just a generational gap among democratic voters but a real divide over which way the

country should be headed. >> i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. i know we can create more good paying jobs and raise incomes for hard-working americans again. know that we can finish the job of universal health care coverage for every single man, woman, and child. >> reporter: nearly two-thirds of caucusgoers were over the age of 40 and among them, clinton enjoyed overwhelming support. bernie sanders, a self-described democratic socialist rivalled immense support against young caucusgoers. >> i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment, and, by the way, to the media establishment. >> reporter: 76% of his supporters in iowa want to see

more liberal policies out of washington. >> this fight continues. >> reporter: a marginal showing from martin o'malley here prompted the former maryland governor to suspend his campaign before all of the votes were even counted. i thinks won't get any easier for clinton. she trails by as much as 20 points. the two of them will both start campaigning there today. nancy cordes, cbs news, des moines. cbs political news director and "face the nation" moderator john dickerson with more on whatting this means. >> ted cruz the first to take on donald trump and come out a victor. for donald trump he has to hope his improvements will improve in new hampshire. ted cruz, marco rubio now owns

that title. he can claim his support was -- he was validated by the voters of iowa as he heads into new hampshire. on the democrated side they fought to a draw which is a long way for bernie sanders who was far way in the polls. he was hoping for a bigger spark out of iowa. now they'll be even tougher because they don't have as many liberals. the race continues. from des moines, iowa, i'm john dickerson, cbs news. coming up on "cbs this morning," we'll have more on the iowa caucus results and look ahead to the primary. this morning a large winter torm is pounding the area t the great lakes. heavy storms are predicted from colorado to michigan. blizzard warnings from nebraska, to south dakota, to iowa.

the stricken cargo ship off the french coast is getting a life line and is being towed to port. the crew has already been evacuated. officials think the cargo shifted in heavy seas. new details about how three california inmates escaped from a maximum security prison, and the findings in an amtrak crash investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news" stand. the "washington post" reports on the release of documents in the investigation into the deadly amtrak crash last may. the accident in philadelphia killed eight people and injured more than 200 others. investigators describe the train's engineer as extremely cooperative. they have so far been unable to pinpoint the cause of the crash. the "los angeles times" reports on new details in the orange county yale barack.

investigators say the three inmates got help from an accomplice on the outside who gave them tools and a ride to freedom. they also allegedly kidnapped a taxi driver and later got into a fight about what to do with him. >> inmate nayeri and inmate duong have a fight. the information we have is the fight was about whether or not to kill the taxi cab driver and bury the bun. >> one of the escapees turned himself in, the other was taken into custody after being spotted outside a whole foods. the comedian's lawyers are expected to ask the judge to throw out the criminal case. they argue cosby had a deal with the d.a. in 2005 that he wouldn't be prosecuted. at the time cosby admitted giving his accuser pills before an encounter in his home.

and "the wall street journal" says the cdc considers the e. coli outbreak at chipotle to be over. it drove the stock down over the past three months. donald trump might be singing to himself this morning "we could have had it all." ♪ in the run-up to the iowa caucuses, trump has used adele's "rolling in the deep" as his rally song but not with the superstar's permission. when asked about the republican's song selection. the camp put it simply adele has not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning. they did not elaborate whether or not they would ask trump to stop using the song. coming up, super bowl 50. we'll go live to san francisco and hear from the players on

bumpy ride leaving practice last night. three team buses were involved in a chain reaction crash near santa clara. it all started when a car cut off the team's motorcade. a trooper involved in the crash has minor injuries. no players or team staffers were hurt. nfl rapped up its media day with a preview. they both took part in the show. jamie yuccas is in san francisco. jamie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. opening night did not disappoint. a leprechaun. >> super bowl 50 kicked off with a huge production. the denver broncos took center stage first. >> it took me a minute. i didn't know it was a bridge we were standing on until i got here. >> reporter: the big question, will peyton manning retire after

the big game. he says he doesn't know. then came the carolina panthers. reporters swarmed all 11 booths set up for all the key players and coaches for each team. when trying to get close this is where the reporters start and then try to jockey for position. >> how much fun are you having right now? >> not a lot of fun. >> how much fun do you plan to have? >> a lot, a lot. >> the nfl wanted to take away from the craziness of past years but there was still a lot. von miller was expected to put on a show. >> you're a fashionable guy. >> i walked into the locker room and they said this is what you're going to wear. >> you don't get to do anything crazy? >> it's all about the team and putting focus on my teammates and the super bowl 50 coming up.

several eagles are flying high in the netherlands. dutch police have been training the birds to take out rogue drones. for now the birds are only successful in simulations but experts hope the eagles will eventually find a safe way to pluck drones from the sky. delta passengers had to make an unexpected landing because of

a fist fight between two flight attendants. the mid-flight fight broke out on january 27th at 37,000 feet. pilots were forced to land the boeing in salt lake city. the flight attendants were removed from the flight and the flight continued. the pilots apologized saying in part the actions of these crew members in no way reflect the values and professionalism we expect from all of our employees. uber is dealing with an unorthodox way of dealing with drunk passengers. remember those? in charlotte uber drivers are putting bop-its in the back seat for passengers who maybe have had one too many. the hope is they keep their hands on the 1990s toy and not the driver. it comes in the wake of takes on two uber drivers.

a photo that went viral around the globe has made it. here's shot of a little boy in afghanistan holding his picture of his favorite footballer lionel messi. so his brother made one from plastic bags. the soccer star saw the shots and is making a trip to see the boy and his fam li. an arizona mother made the gracious decision to donate her 7-month-old's organs when he passed away. she got to meet the little girl jordan who received his heart. the most touching moment came when the mother got to hear her son's heart beating once again. >> it's so strong. >> it is. >> jordan is just one of three children given a chance at new

how was ted cruz able to best him? >> trump did. for people who said it because their first caucus, donald trump did very well but ted cruz did even better. he identified not just new caucusgoers but a lot of people who would be reliable. they call themselves very conservative. that's according to script. >> so marco rubio, he really wanted to come in third but on the heels of donald trump. that's pretty good. >> it is. it's surprising it's a very strong third. >> it had him in the mid-teens. he exceeded that. with the primaries, it is not so much about that but beating expectations. so for rubio politically that's going to beat expectations. >> speaking of expectations and

the democrats we have bernie sanders basically neck and neck with. in terms of expectations she's expected to be the leader, he's expected not to. what does this all mean. >> what this means is there's a big age spli split in the democratic party. hillary clinton did better. bernie sanders as we expected did very well with younger voters, obviously not quite enough to give him any kind of decisive win but to get him to just about even. but there's also a split, too, among what voters wanted to see in a candidate. honest and trustworthiness. bernie sanders did very, very well. for electability even as voters told us going in, they wanted to see that as a candidate and that went for hillary clinton. >> thank you so much for talking with us. coming up on "cbs this morning," the results of the
